Prashar Lake

Prashar lake trek has been the one of the best getaways on weekends.  Prashar Lake is situated 49 km north of MandiHimachal PradeshIndia, with a three storied pagoda-like temple dedicated to the sage Prashar.

History :- The lake is held sacred to the sage Prashar and he is regarded to have meditated here. The temple was built in 13th century. The lake has floating island in it and the depth of the lake is unclear.

Mythology says that the Pandavas were on their way after Mahabharata with Deity Kamrunag (based on which this entire valley is known as Kamru Valley today) to find best place for their teacher, Dev Kamrunag and the Deity loved the isolation of this place so much that he decided to stay here for the rest of his life. On his request, Bheem, one of the Pandava brothers, formed the lake by pushing his elbow and forearm on the peak of the mountain

And that is the reason believed by locals after oval-shaped lake with depth unknown. Many a time in storms an almost 30-meter-tall cedar tree would fall into the lake to disappear.

Things to Remember

  1. As the trek passes through the forest and consists of many trials, that can result into loss of path. So , hiring the Guide from Baggi Village or Mandi is advisable.
  2. As the trek is named after Sage Prashar and temple is situated at the camp site, so prefer not to carry alcohol.

The slopes are quite steep so it takes good effort to ascent the trails during the trek. The trek is quite strenuous. If you are  going in Mid-March, traits of snow would be visible at few spots.

The first few kilometers of the trek is covered with dense forests and the rivulets but as you ascent, the trail converts from the surroundings of canopy of birch trees to small meadows.

At the mid of the trek, You will get to meet the dog, i would be lucky and he will keep started following me. Visitors have named him ‘SHADOW’ as he accompanies the travelers same does the Shadow.

The trail is covered with many flowers such as Buras.

Few shepherd Huts are about 200-300 meters away from Prashar Lake. The Prashar lake view is awful. The small blue dark water, with floating land, is surrounded by the mountains.

The temple is situated on the banks of the lake. The edifice is so captivating as the walls are craved with sculptures of various Gods and Goddesses.Son of Great Sage Guru Vashisht, Rishi Prashar spent austere years of his life at this place, so the lake and the temple were named after him. The temple even contains dormitories.
